Framing
Framing All of our decks, no matter the height of the deck, are built with 6”x6” support posts. The tops of the 6”x6” support posts are notched to receive the solid double 2”x10” or 2”x12” support beam. This method promotes strength and durability of the structural portion of the deck by having the 6”x6” support post actually support the beam. When the individual boards of the beam sandwich the 6”x6” support posts, the bolts are forced to be the sole support of the deck; thus, not allowing the support posts to do their job. Our joist system is made up of either grade #1 2”x8” or 2”x10” joists placed no more than 16” on center.
All of our framing material, joist system and double beam, with the exception of the 6”x6” posts, are of grade #1 pressure-treated pine to ensure a consistent floor especially with composite decking.

| Decking
The decking is run on a diagonal pattern as a standard unless specified differently by homeowner or composite decking manufacturer. We do this because running the decking boards on the diagonal will give the deck the most strength, limit the side to side movement and completely eliminate the need to splice. Our standard pressure-treated decking is the Clear & Better (C&BTR) 2”x 6” pressure-treated pine. We say that it is 99% knot free even though the majority of decks we use this on are knot free. Take notice, when looking at the pictures of our projects, of the clarity of the wood. The other types of wood decks that we have built are Cedar, Ipe, and Garapa.
Composite Decking
There are numerous composite decking products on the market today. The ones that we have commonly used are TREX®, AZEK® and Fiberon®. We are open to using any of the other composite decking materials that you are interested in using for your project. Just to name a few more, you have: TimberTech®, Evergrain®, WeatherBest®, Geodeck® and CorrectDeck®. Composite decking can be fastened down using coloring matching screws or as an option, hidden fasteners can be used.

Fascia
All of our decks are trimmed out with a fascia board to cover the end edges of the decking. Our wood decks we us a select grade of 1”x4” or 1”x6” depending on joist size. Composite decks with the white vinyl railing will have the white PVC fascia board or the complimenting fascia board that each of the composite decking brands offer.

| Railing
Our railing options include vinyl, composite, or all grade #1 pressure-treated. On our pressure-treated railings as an option you may choose a redwood or cedar top cap in place of our standard grade #1 2”x6” top cap. The typical vinyl railing system that we use is the known as Endurance Rail® . Each of the composite decking manufacturers has railing systems to compliment their decking products with various styles. As stated in the Composite Decking section, there are numerous railing systems available and we are open to using any one of the systems you decide to choose for your project.

Stairs
All of our stairs have a grade #1 2”x12” stringer as the main support. The risers are always closed with a grade #1 2”x8” board which also acts as a structural member for nailing down the treads. In our low maintenance decks, we use a 3/4” PVC board as the riser and the stringers are also covered with the PVC trim which matches the covered joists.

Screen Porches
You can choose from the four different roof styles, the gable, the hip, the gazebo or the shed. As a standard we use a product called “Super Screen®” which is said to be pet proof, to screen all of our porches. In constructing our wood porches, the screening is stapled to the outside of the 4”x4” posts and Grade #1 pressure-treated pine fascia is screwed on so that it may easily be removed if the screen needs to be replaced. Our vinyl screen porches are constructed with channels being screwed to the outside of the 4”x4” posts, which are covered with a vinyl sleeve, the screen is rolled into the channels and is then capped with a white vinyl cover. Aluminum fascia and vinyl soffit are used to match the existing house. All screen porches include gutters and downspouts. The roof sheathing used is T-111, which gives the interior ceiling of the screen porch a more finished look which complements the grade #1 pressure-treated roof rafters for the open ceiling look. Another option is to finish the interior ceiling of the screen porch with a vinyl porch ceiling or PVC ceiling board. You will have the option to choose between a wood or an aluminum screen door.

What are your ideas?
We, as custom deck and porch builders, are open to all the new and classic products and styles on the market today. We have the experience and skills, (over 30 years, as an individual) so put that together with all the incredible innovations that are continuously being made available and anything is possible!
As you can tell, we use nothing less than the highest quality of materials. The highest quality of workmanship is only as good as the materials used. This is the reason we use the pressure-treated grade #1 even in our framing. The pressure-treated grade #11 is denser than the grade #2 thus the problem of shrinking and warping are lessened. Don’t get us wrong, some shrinkage is to be expected and is unavoidable. A good wood preservative is highly recommended as soon as your deck is built to further protect it from the UV rays and the elements. If you wait 3 months or more, the damage will already be done. Preventive care goes a long way, don’t put our hard work to shame, protect your investment!
